Cultural Proficiency


    In Fall 2018, Oceanside Unified School District established a Culturally Proficient Educator Committee made up of administrators, teachers, and staff with the purpose of designing, building, reviewing, and recommending appropriate resources, professional learning opportunities, and approaches aimed putting into practice the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act and fostering an equitable learning environment for all students and staff. 

    For the past two years, the team has worked to:

    • Provide unconscious bias workshops to all staff district-wide in partnership with California Teachers Association Human Rights Department
    • Facilitate Museum of Tolerance staff trips 
    • Revise existing district policies to ensure inclusivity of all races, gender expressions and other identities
    • Curate curriculum, lessons and classroom libraries regarding diversity and cross-cultural understanding
    • Develop new high school Ethnic Studies course for 2020-21 school year
    • Outline and adopt procedures for addressing hate-motivated behaviors in schools
    • Teach conversation protocols to recognize, interrupt and repair incidents of bias and discrimination
    • Host workshops on restorative practices, which aim to end disciplinary practices that disproportionately impact students of color
    • Hire additional elementary school counselors, who guide social emotional curriculum on core tenets like social awareness
