Board of Education Adopts Resolution Honoring Pride Month
In an effort to honor the significant contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, the OUSD Board of Education supported the resolution NO. 47 (20-21) presented by staff in recognition of LGBTQ+ pride month. This resolution directed the superintendent and all district staff to continue supporting lessons, activities, and conversations that engage students in learning, research, and writing about LGBTQ+ students and families.
“OUSD is committed to providing safe and inclusive learning environments for all students and staff. The adoption of this resolution demonstrates the commitment of the OUSD Board of Education, district leadership, and district staff in recognizing Pride Month and supporting policies, practices, and curricula that honor and respect LGBTQ+ students, staff, and their families,” said OUSD Board President Dr. Stacy Begin.
OUSD advocates and promotes the safe, inclusive, respectful treatment, and belonging of all of our students and staff. As part of our most important mission of supporting all students and providing a safe and inclusive learning environment, we condemn bias and discrimination in all of its forms at any time. Discrimination based on sex, race, color, religion, national origin, ethnic group, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other unlawful consideration, whether actual or perceived, will not be tolerated.
OUSD’s equity policies and practices have been supported by the board of education, union leadership, and a Culturally Proficient Educator Committee made up of administrators, teachers, classified staff, and community members. The committee was formed in 2018 with the purpose of creating equitable learning environments for all students and implementing the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act. Since its inception, the committee has developed calendars to honor various cultural celebrations, curated inclusive lessons and materials, trained more than 400 educators in the restorative disciplinary models, and supported school counselors who have taught more than 3,000 lessons on self and social awareness.
“The actions the Board of Education took at our June 8 meeting to acknowledge and support LGBTQ+ Pride Month and to expand our Healthy Kids survey, demonstrates their commitment to ensure our LGBTQ+ students know they are supported and loved in Oceanside Unified. The raising of the Pride Flag acknowledges all families and all LGBTQ+ people in Oceanside. Thank you to the Board for this strong leadership and action oriented support for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Superintendent Dr. Julie A. Vitale.
Policies adopted by the board include a safe haven resolution to protect all students regardless of immigration status, non-harassment and non-discrimination policy, a “Black Lives Matter” resolution, and this resolution in recognition of LGBTQ+ Pride Month. OUSD is also proud to offer a high school Ethnic Studies course starting the 2021/22 school year, along with other programs listed on the Cultural Proficiency website.
A pride flag will fly over the district office throughout the month of June in support of our LGBTQ+ community.
